DHAKA, Insurance Bulletin: A high-level strategic meeting was held today (24 June, 2026) between the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) and the state-owned non-life insurer, Sadharan Bima Corporation (SBC), at the IDRA headquarters. Presided over by IDRA Chairman Mir Nadia Nevin, the session focused on driving systemic reforms, strengthening market discipline, and accelerating technological integration within the country's insurance landscape. The SBC delegation was led by its Managing Director, Md. Harun-or-Rashid, alongside other senior corporate executives.
During the meeting, the progress of long-pending insurance claims was thoroughly reviewed. SBC management reported a significant reduction in their claim backlog and affirmed that targeted measures are underway to fast-track the remaining settlements. Emphasizing the importance of these efforts, IDRA Chairman Mir Nadia Nevin stated that timely claim payouts remain the primary benchmark for restoring public trust in the industry. Furthermore, participants discussed the imperative of bringing state-owned assets and mega infrastructure projects under comprehensive insurance coverage. Utilizing disaster risk financing frameworks for these assets was highlighted as a vital mechanism to protect the national exchequer from sudden fiscal shocks caused by natural disasters or catastrophic events.
The regulator also expressed strong concern over the practice of under-tariffing, or charging premiums below the mandated tariff rates. To address this, IDRA assured that strict supervisory measures would be enforced to curb unfair competition and restore discipline in the market. Additionally, the leadership explored new initiatives to boost domestic reinsurance capacity. Strengthening this segment is projected to significantly minimize capital outflow by retaining a higher volume of insurance premiums within the country's economy.
A significant portion of the dialogue was dedicated to modernization through institutional digital transformation. The authorities reviewed the implementation progress of Supervisory Technology (SupTech), Regulatory Technology (RegTech), and SBC's internal Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. These tech-driven initiatives are expected to optimize operational efficiency, enhance financial transparency, and enable real-time regulatory oversight.
The collaborative push between the apex regulator and the state-owned insurance giant underscores a synchronized effort to transition Bangladesh's insurance sector toward global standards of financial stability and tech-enabled governance. Senior officials from both organizations were present at the meeting, signaling a unified approach toward the prompt execution of the discussed frameworks.
